Now being a typical Capetonian girl (my goth friends will want to stone me for this) I like getting a nice tan when I can. Funnily enough, despite the extreme climate in Thailand, this has proven to be somewhat of a challenge here... The Thai women are extremely skin-conscious and subscribe to the notion that the whiter your skin is, the more attractive you are. This leads to the (in my case) extremely inconvenient state of affairs that all female beauty products in Thailand contain whitening agents designed to lighten your skin. From the body lotions to the deodorants, they all proudly sport the words "UV Whitening" or "Ultra Skin Lightening System" and the like.
Now being a person who believes in good personal hygiene I obviously need to use these products, making it nigh impossible for me to get a tan, with the result that my naturally olive skin is left looking decidedly pasty...
